Growing Camellias in the Home Garden and using Camellias for Landscape Design

Camellias are a favourite both in the home garden and as landscape plants. Camellias are a tough plant, with Sasanqua Camellias providing flowers from mid fall and then the Camellia Japonica taking over with flowers until late spring. In colder regions flowering starts a little later.

Camellias are a surface rooting plant and will grow in dark areas of the garden, the flowers providing a great display in the colder months and the glossy green foliage of Camellias looks fantastic as a backdrop.

Camellias make great flowering heges, while the species Camellia Japonica is a denser grower than Camellia Sasanqua both are happy to be clipped back to form a hedge or screen.

Camellia flowers come in a full range of colors from white to brilliants reds. The only true yellow flowering Camellia Crysantha, is rare in cultivation and flowering is somewhat sporadic.

Camellias can be pruned in late winter, if overgrown they can be heaily pruned, even cut back to 24in above the ground, but in general Camellias only need to be shaped.

Keep Camellias well mulch ed, they do like a cool root run. Fertilize camellias with a in specialist Camellia Fertilizer in March and June.
