Thuja plicata Atrovirens

Thuja plicata Atrovirens is an evergreen conifer used widely as a hedging plant or as a specimen tree.

This is a narrower growing form of the Western Red Cedar, Thuja plicata which is native to the United states ranging from Alaska to California.


Most commonly used as a hedging plant the variety Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’ is a smaller growing columnar or narrow growing tree that will reach around 30ft in height.

It forms a dense hedge with very strong buttressed trunks, it also has a habit of staying green in the centre rather than drying out.


A very good selection for use as a a tall hedge with attractive green glossy foliage.


The species Thuja plicata Atrovirens has a natural pyramidical habit however as it is often pruned to a formal hedge this is not always noticed.

Thuja Plicata Atrovirens with its fragrant foliage, makes an good alternative to Leylandii.

Landscaping Uses


Although not always seen as a multi purpose plant, the Western Red Cedar is used both as a hedging plant and as a large ornamental tree.


As a hedge it is best planted around 2ft apart. It is excellent up to around 6 – 8 ft. Prune in spring. Young growth rate is good at 2 ft a year, again depending on conditions. The fine foliage make it great hedge and easy to prune.


As a feature tree it may take 20 years to get to 20 ft, however over time these majestic trees can get to 100ft in good conditions.
