Achillea Tomentosa is a low growing mat forming ground cover plant also known as Woolly Yarrow. A hardy spreading perennial that grows well in many areas of the USA.

Outstanding plants for those hot dry positions in the garden, Woolly Yarrow is a low growing species that will make an excellent ground cover.

Reaching only around 8 inches (20 cm) high it flowers for a long period over summer to fall.

Achillea tomentosa is the botanical name and propagation by division is a sure way to expand a clump at low cost.

Suitable for use in rock gardens or between paver’s ‘Woolly Yarrow’ is low growing with attractive yellow flowers in spring to summer.

Referred to as Woolly yarrow or ‘Dwarf Yarrow’. Using the hairs on the leaves to reflect light Achillea tomentosa or Woolly yarrow also uses its foliage to trap moisture and slow transpiration.

Yellow flowers in spring rise above the mat forming foliage which itself reaches only 8″. Used as a ground cover plant Woolly Yarrow has soft attractive aromatic foliage and is the lowest growing Achillea.

Care

Division also keeps clumps healthy, and although Woolly yarrow thrives in poor soils, this is a great time to dig in some extra compost to give it a boost.

Fast growing and spreading, keep this plant is check in open areas, works well in the rock garden and requires little water except in dry conditions. Zones 3 – 11.

Propagation

Easy by division of established clumps in early spring as new growth commences. Propagation is also possible from seed, best sown in spring with a germination time of around 3 weeks.

Seeds need to be kept moist and warm during germination. Sow seeds on the surface and press lightly into the propagating soil.
