Asarum maximum

Rare and unusual, Asarum maximum is perhaps best known for Asarum maximum ‘Ling Ling’ (pictured right) is the Panda Faced asarum.

With undoubtedly some of the most spectacular flowers of all of the asarums are those of Asarum maximum. Large deep chocolate brown to almost black and creamy white flowers that appear in early spring.

This is an evergreen Asarum and is worth growing for the foliage alone, it is ground hugging and the large leaves are patterned.

The flowers are wonderful, but a little shy, they ‘hide’ beneath the foliage and you may just need to look closely or give the foliage a ‘lift’ to get the best view.

Care

Asarum maximum Foliage
Asarum maximum Foliage

It is really the foliage that we want to show off, so plant where it can be seen, closer to a path or in a container in a shaded part of the garden.

Good dappled shade and a humus rich moist but well drained soil for Asarum maximum. We use a little liquid seaweed fertiliser in spring and ours seems happy enough.

Grow it in the garden as a foliage plant or in a container as a specimen where you can let the foliage fall over the sides and get a better look at Asarum maximum ‘ling lings’ pretty flowers.
